How a weighted course grade is calculated

Your final course grade is built from its components — an exam, assignments, a project, sometimes attendance — with each component carrying a weight percentage fixed in the syllabus:

(grade₁ × weight₁ + grade₂ × weight₂ + …) ÷ 100

The difference from a simple average is real and not negligible. An exam of 80 weighing 60% and assignments of 95 weighing 40% give 86 — not 87.5 as a simple average would. The heavy component pulls harder, and that's exactly what turns “what should I invest in” into a question of weights, not just difficulty.

The reverse direction: what you need on the final

This is actually the more common question, and it usually gets asked the week before. If the assignments are already locked in and only the exam remains, the calculation runs backwards:

  1. Count how many points are already banked — each component's grade times its weight, divided by 100
  2. Subtract them from the target grade. What's left is how many points the exam has to supply
  3. Divide by the exam's weight. That's the required grade

Example: assignments of 95 at 40% weight give 38 points. The target is 60, so 22 points remain for an exam weighing 60% — meaning a grade of 36.7 on the exam. A number that sounds low, which is exactly why it's worth calculating instead of guessing.

Watch for a minimum exam grade. Some courses set a minimum bar on the final exam in its own right, on top of the weighted grade. Where that requirement exists — it overrides the calculation, and a 37 won't help even if the weighted grade comes out passing. The bar appears in the syllabus.

Why this matters for planning, not just curiosity

The moment the weights are visible, the week's priorities change. A problem set worth 5% that takes a whole evening is worth less than a project worth 30% that takes two days. That sounds obvious, but most students don't look at the weights until a week before the exam — and by then the decision is no longer in their hands.

It's also why this calculation is worth more mid-semester than at its end. In the middle it can still change where your hours sit; at the end it only reports. The guide to credits shows the same principle at the level of the whole semester.

How do you calculate a weighted course grade?

Multiply each component's grade by its weight percentage, add up all the products, and divide by 100. For example: an exam of 80 at 60% weight and assignments of 95 at 40% weight give (80×60 + 95×40) divided by 100, which is 86. Note that this is not the simple average of 80 and 95, which would be 87.5.

What grade do I need on the final to pass the course?

Work out how many points you've already banked from the known components, subtract them from your target, and divide by the final's weight. If you've banked 38 of the 40 possible points from assignments and the target is 60, 22 points remain to be earned from a final worth 60% — meaning a grade of 36.7 on the exam. Check whether the course has a minimum exam grade requirement, because in that case it overrides the calculation.

What happens if the weights don't add up to 100%?

If you haven't entered all the components yet, the calculation shows your grade from what's known so far, not the final grade. If you've entered everything and the total still isn't 100, one of the percentages is probably wrong — compare against the syllabus, which is the binding source.

What is a minimum exam grade and why does it matter?

Some courses require a minimum grade on the final exam in its own right, on top of the weighted course grade. Where such a requirement exists, a passing weighted grade isn't enough if the exam itself is below the bar — and any calculation that relies only on the weighting is misleading. The requirement appears in the course syllabus.
