- The day you asked to keep free
- A fixed evening hour on days that never get evening shifts
The core doesn't need to be big. Six to eight hours a week that always stay the same are worth more than twenty that keep moving — because only they become a habit, and only they can have the hard material assigned to them in advance.
The core gets the material that demands a clear head. Proofs, new material, projects. Everything else — summaries, repetitive exercises, reading — goes to the variable filling. That decision separates a week that worked from one that didn't, more than anything else.
3. Keep a stock of short tasks
Whoever works shifts receives time in pieces: 40 minutes before a shift, an hour between classes, a 25-minute commute. Those pieces almost always go to waste — not because you can't study in them, but because deciding what to do with them takes longer than the window itself.
The solution is a list prepared in advance. Once a week, break the big tasks into items that fit a short window:

- Assign the heavy material to the core, by what's urgent this week
- Spread the short tasks into the windows created around the shifts

5. A shift that lands on a deadline

At the start of the semester, open the syllabi and mark the three heaviest deadlines and the exam dates. Those are the only days genuinely worth requesting in advance. Asking for three days a semester sounds reasonable; asking weekly sounds like something else.
